These performances are magnificent.

"The Iona Brown/St. Martins performances of the Handel Concerti Grossi Op. 3 and 6 are incredible--flawless ensemble, incredible rhythmic energy, perfect tempi, heartbreaking phrasing and expression that can only be compared to the best in vocal performance. The recordings are remastered from my favorite Phillips LPs. I believe the recordings were made in the late 70s. This is desert island stuff. The recording quality is good and clear. The sound and interpretations are pure and simple--no ponderous or scraping "original instruments" noises, and no Hamilton Harty-esque modern gloss. The experience is like the very best Mozart performances--they have their own intrinsic energy and are so beautiful that you are not conscious of any effort being made to play them. You don't have to be a classical music geek to love this stuff. The uninitiated in my household enjoy it thoroughly."
