"Haciendo Punto en Otro Son ( or simply, Haciendo Punto) started in Puerto Rico during the mid seveties as part of Latin America's Nueva Trova (+/- New Song)which was already a major movement lead by Cuba, Argentina and Chile. Besides playing native rythms from Puerto Rico (salsa IS of cuban origin), they would also play songs from the rest of South America as to introduce puertorrican audiences with these songs of strong social thematics. Thanks to them, the almost forgotten puertorrican country music (in this case, "mountain music")became popularized amongst middle class youths bringing an alternative to those of us who did not, at the moment, like salsa. The band lasted for about 10 year, but not with its original members. This record compiles part of it, but the best are those who have the original members:
Silverio Pérez (Cuban exilé)
Tony Croatto (argentinian of Italian descent)
Nano Cabrera (Puertorrican)
Josie LaTorre (Puertorrican)"

"What are the odds? I was just in Miami visiting my family (I am Cuban raised in Puerto Rico), and my father played for me a CD by the Argentian group "Les Luthiers" from the 70's, and I recognized much of the "Johann Sebastian Mastropiero" material Tony Croatto and Co. lifted for their original recording (which is OK - much good art is knowing how and when to borrow it without anyone noticing it). And then - on the same day (Xmas Eve/NocheBuena)- my brother shows me this same recording! This recording is a collector's item just because finding this stuff is virtually impossible. It is a clever compilation of popular PtoRican music, iconoclastic wit and political incorrectness, which not surprisingly, hardly makes much money, but is artistically fulfilling. As a musician myself (seasoned flamenco guitarist with Baroque and Renaissance inspirations) I can wholeheartedly recommend this recording to anyone. "Aqui hay mucho arte."
