Fromental Halévy's grand opera La Juive is another early Romantic work that has been revived increasingly in our time. Mahler called it "one of the greatest operas ever created". Though the taxing leading role was championed by Caruso, Halevy's masterpiece had to wait until 1974 for its first studio recording - not complete, but containing most of the important scenes. The tenor was Richard Tucker, heard in the last recording before his untimely death, still singing heroically. The stellar cast also includes two of the outstanding sopranos of the period, Martina Arroyo in the title role and Anna Moffo. This is its first release on CD.
