Amazon.comFor a single week in 1986, baritone saxophone trailblazer Hamiet Bluiett formed an amazing band at the now-defunct New York club, Carlos 1. Bluiett dubbed the group Concept, enlisting famed pianist Don Pullen and dual percussionists Chief Bey and Idrees Muhammad. Concept's live performances as documented on this CD are astoundingly limber, invoking unlimited jazz vocabularies from bebop to free improvisation. Bluiett, a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet, barks gruffly and soars mightily on baritone. Tempos go from slack to speedy with hairpin turns and adventurous leaps, and Pullen whirls across the piano, blurring chords into a molten cascade. This is live jazz at its best. --Andrew Bartlett
