Synopsis

Amazon.com
In his latest go at these scores, recorded in 1993 for Hanssler, Sir Neville Marriner incorporates a good deal of what has been learned over the past two decades about tempo, articulation, and ornamentation in 18th-century music. The fast tempos are a bit quicker, and the articulation lighter, than in his classic 1971 recording, and there is a great deal more freedom of ornamentation. The string complement is a large one (the booklet lists 25 violinists, led by the incomparable Kenneth Sillito), yet the playing is, if anything, more precise and more elegantly phrased than before. --Ted Libbey

CD Reviews

Recording quality not up to par
J. Lee | Los Angeles, CA United States | 08/24/2005

"Unfortunately, I also own the Philips version of Handel's Water Music performed by Marriner/ASMF. The sound quality from Philips is far superior. All the details and crisp highs are missing in this recording from Hanssler. I'd give it 4.5 stars for the music and interpretation. But for sound quality, I only give it 3."
Absolutely Outstanding

"This recording is superb. It exceeds all others I have encountered in its excellence of conducting, musicianship, and recording quality. I'm very impressed with its sensitivity toward Handel's works, both by the conductor and the musicians. The slightly unusual ornamentation of the works is intriguing, and occasionally caused me to turn my head and say, "Oh, really? I hadn't thought of that!" Occasionally the instrumentation is unusual as well, as in the staggering of the trumpets in an early segment, and the result is thoroughly enjoyable.

Let us enjoy Handel's works as if they were new. This recording will give you relief from the tired, jaded performances of Handel as "standard repertoire." You will be in for a very big treat.
