"This CD brings together two quartet LPs Hank Jones made for Capitol in 1958; the first features a lineup of standards while the second is a Porgy and Bess album. Hank is pretty much front-and-center on all the tunes; guitarist Barry Galbraith is barely heard on the first set (his only real solo occurs on BLUE LIGHTS), while Kenny Burrell gets a bit more solo space on the Porgy and Bess material, taking good solos on I AIN'T GOT NO SHAME and IT AIN'T NECESSARILY SO. Al Cohn did the arranging for the Porgy LP and is especially noteworthy on I GOT PLENY O' NOTHIN'. Hank Jones, though a modern player, sticks pretty much in a mainstream-swing mode and is effective on up-tempo swingers like DON'T EVER LEAVE ME or pretty ballads such as MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE. STAR EYES gets an unusual reading that works marvelously. Osie Johnson's brushwork is crisp and tantalizing. It's obvious that Capitol wanted to issue a couple of solid, competent middle-of-the-road jazz albums back in 1958, and that's exactly what Hank Jones and gang gave them. Very pleasant music to listen to, and it's good to have them back on the market again."
