That all changed after I first heard Hanneke play at the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle of 2003. She is one of the most lyrical, expressive musicians I have ever heard. When Ms. Casel plays it sounds like she is singing through her instrument.
1. Waves in the Sand/Flora MacDonald/Johnnie Sullivan's/Kelly's Itsakadoozie--Haunting and upbeat. Guaranteed to make you dance! (5/5) 2. November--This sounds like fall. You can almost see the leaves changing. Definitely introspective and thoughtful. (5/5) 3. The Phunk Bridge/Glen Road to Carrick/Ben's Nightmare--Funky (I wonder if that bridge isn't actually called "Funk Bridge." haha.....) 4. Farewell to Mass. Ave./Cello Dude/ The Skye Chune--Thoughtful and sentimental melody. Beautiful. (5/5) 5. First Goodbye--When she played this song at the concert I had to blink back the tears (it didn't work..I ended up bawling). The melody of this song just yanks at your heartstrings and makes you remember the first time someone broke your heart. Hanneke called it her "sad Scottish love song." She wasn't kidding! (5/5) 6. The Kitchen Maid/Bancroft's Descent/Arthur's Seat--Sensitively played, excellent expression. (5/5) 7. Highlander's Farewell/MacLaine of Loch Buie/Bedding of the Bride/Return of Miltown/Paddy Taylor's--This medley of songs has got a real Scottish style to it, but without bagpipes! (5/5) 8. Leaving You--Written for all of the people she met during her four years at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sentimental and youthful. (5/5) 9. Tannen's Wedding March/You and I/Miss Jena--The march was written for her brother's wedding, and Miss Jenna written for a friend of hers from school. Very romantic and beautifully written by Hanneke. (5/5) 10. King of the Pipers/Farewell to Tchernobyl/Fairy Dance--Gorgeous and melodious. (5/5) 11. Josefin's/Breton Gavotte--She calls Josefin's the "it waltz of the 2000s." Hanneke wasn't kidding. Both tunes are definitely catchy! (5/5) 12. My Joy--This title cut is so beautiful. It sounds equally reflective and warm. (5/5)" |
