This set holds two treasures, one of them flawed. Grace Hoffman sings with genuine feeling, but neither she nor Helmut Melchert is the kind of major singer Mahler's music requires. Still, the conducting in this work is so comprehending and passionate that it makes for a fascinating performance, one that will appeal particularly to listeners who already know the work. While the orchestra (founded by conductor Hans Rosbaud) wasn't the most sumptuous sounding in the world, the kind of playing the conductor got from it in the Bruckner, combined with his superb understanding of the music, made for a memorable performance, well worth the price of the set in itself. The Mahler texts are included, a nice touch at this price. --Leslie Gerber

"The reviewer is not worth her salt. Clare Hoffman is one of the sharpest I have heard sing this part. Just listen to the second song, listen for her control, her allowing the line to float along with the music. Just listen at 2:41 (Track 2) at the dialogue between Rosbaud and herself- breathtaking. And should i go on about Rosbaud? At the nuance he's achieved?"

"Years ago when I heard my first Mahler and Bruckner symphonies in Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh under the leadership of Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, I started to buy all the recordings I was able to afford as a graduate student. One of the earliest recordings on a Vox label of these two works were conducted by Rosbaud. They remain outstanding interpretations still in my collection. What a magisterial interpreter he was of Bruckner and Mahler. Pitifully, he is hardly known in this country."

"the missing star only applies to spoiled ears, overly accustomed to modern standards of reproduction. if you understood the beauty of analog sound over digital when it was an issue, this was one of your exemplary recordings. Performance-wise?
the das lied is a wonder of pacing, rosbaud pays shrewd attention to nuance. brilliant interlacing of vocal lines with the orchestra. trinkel sounds scrappy, bowed bloodied but unbroken, the rest get better as you keep listening.
bruckner: i wont be able to do it justice. just listen (theres soundbites around here somewhere, aren't there?)"
