Synopsis

Intending to cultivate a sonic environment conducive to "energy and rejuvenation," this nearly hour-long disc is one installment in the three-stage Herbal Harmonies series, a music-for-your-health concept package that scores high marks for presentation but sometimes sags in artistic interpretation. The idea with Ginseng is to deliver selections that sustain tempos ranging between 120 and 155 beats per minute and thus stimulate an audio atmosphere that can "boost your energy and lift your spirits." Does it work? It's pleasant, lightweight music that might turn the trick for some (depending on your interpretation of "energy"), but discerning listeners seeking genuinely energizing music would probably find more satisfying results elsewhere. The five selections are light pop and breezy jazz concoctions from the Herbal Harmonies "band" (bass, drums, guitar, violin, sax, and flute), led by pianist/keyboardist Joseph Nagler, the project's composer. Imagine George Benson during his most carefree day and you have an idea of what awaits on Ginseng. The easygoing fourth track, "Journey Home," sets a laconic pace that seems to fall short of the 120-bpm quotient mandated by the disc's theme. It's acceptable background music (most noteworthy is the anticipatory "Here, Now"), just not especially memorable music. --Terry Wood
