CD Reviews

One of the best Hawkwind albums....ever
Mike Reed | 03/22/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"One of the most tantilising tracks on this album has to be the title track Quark Strangeness and Charm. The clever lyrics and rhyming story line conjures up an image that is unique to every listener. The album is an old classic and favourite of mine and is an extension of the ever evolving Hawkwind line up. The space theme that runs throughout plus the socio-political statements being made are still relevant as much today as they were when the album was first released.
A first class album that is not the best known, but certainly the best!"
Hawkwind - 'Quark' four track CD-single (Griffin)
Mike Reed | USA | 08/23/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Do keep in mind that this IS,in fact a four track CD single,it is NOT the actual disc 'Quark Stangeness&Charm'.It does have the title cut from THAT lp,as well as two mixes of "Uncle Sam's On Mars" as I really liked the Martian Conquest Mix as well as the ten-minute unreleased tune "Black Sun",which is exclusive to this single. For big-time Hawkfans ONLY.Line-up appears to be Brock,Alan Davey and Richard Chadwick.More or less JUST another disc to add to your already extensive Hawkwind collection."
A disappointing EP from a consistently great band.

"This four song EP really goes nowhere. The version of quark, strangeness and charm is a slower version much like the one found on the business trip live cd. Why they decided to rerecord it slower and more raggae-ish is beyond me. The original version is far superior. The EP also carries 2 versions of Uncle Sam's on Mars. Again, both inferior to the original. Problem with these mixes is the vocal track is buried and the remixes are both unremarkable. At least they should of added the original version for people to compare and enjoy the social satire of the lyrics. The other track on this EP is Black Sun. It starts out promising enough but goes on and on leading to nowhere. Even the artwork on the cover does not do anything. Skip this EP. The only thing it does is remind me how great Robert Calvert was as a songwriter and singer. May he rest in peace."
