"How HOT was this lineup? "Big Bang" hot. In 30+ years, Hawkwind never came close to duplicating this energy on any other recording. THAT's how good it is. If you like Hawkwind but haven't heard Space Ritual, you haven't heard Hawkwind. I would gladly pay TWICE the asking price if I didn't already own 3 copies (and the original CD release, not to mention vinyl...)."

"For a band who became famous for having a voluptuous female dancer called Stacia that used to get her kit off, Hawkwind haven't half released a lot of albums in their thirty one year career, and yes this poor mutt's got everyone of them, they even had a hit single in 1972, when "Silver Machine" reached No 3 in Britain and they all stood motionless on Top of the Pops. The line up to Hawkwind has been so unstable that sometimes, the line-up on the front of the cover of an album is different to the one on the back, because somebody left, or joined, or split in two, or combusted. The list of musicians is endless, but to mention some of the more incredible are Ian Kiliminster (Lemmy of Motorhead to you guvnor) Bob Calvert, Hyw Lloyd Langton, Dave Brock, Nik Turner, Simon House, Harvey Bainbridge, Dik Mik, (who was in the band for two whole years before the others realized he wasn't a musician) and unbelievably Ginger Baker, who must of woken up wondering what happened to Eric & Jack.Through all the turmoil of changes they just kept on going, making Spinal Tap look serious, creating their own genre of music called (roll of drums) "Space Rock", all the time making bands like Pink Floyd seem very straight. 31 years after the first Hawkwind gig they are still going today, I can't tell you what the line up is as it will have changed in the last half an hour, but it doesn't matter, as Dave the Dog said if you can't headbang all the way through the 11 minutes & 32 seconds of Brainstorm, then your ready for a collar and lead. If you want to see what I mean about Stacia, get the double C.D. Space Ritual, I don't know about Space Rock, but definetly Space. Mott the Dog."
A re-release of a Hawkwind classic

"I think few Hawkwind fans would dispute that Space Ritual is the best Hawkind album ever. The re-release is a first class job in terms of art work, the mix and the removal of the breaks put into the original version. The only downside is that it's not cheap."

"I discovered this thing years and years ago, and immediately gravitated to it. Some 20+ years on, it's still not lost its heavy, spacey charm. British proto-metal side by side with processed bleeps, stuttering electronics, and Radiophonic Workshop-style SF soundeffects, done totally live and totally over-the-top. And the lyrics...all ominous, all dark, with additional 'fun' from SF author Michael Moorcock. The one to get for those starting out with Hawkwind, I think...as well as for anyone who thinks 'space rock' has to be of the floaty-drifty proggy style ala Pink Floyd, et al. Saturate brain with chemicals, press play, head for Alpha Centauri..."

"Hawkwind weren't the original heavy rock band; nor were they the first psychedelic/space rock group. But they did what they did with such style that it doesn't really matter that the particular brand of psychedelia exhibited on 'Space Ritual' had all but died out three or four years previously. Mercifully the heavy guitar riffage courtesy Dave Brock was very much in fashion in 1972 and indeed still is. That is not to take anything away from the lyrics however. Doubtless they are not to everyone's tastes but one tends to find the science fiction poetry interludes entertaining rather than irritating (in the inner sleeve, Hawkwind member Bob Calvert is credited with contributing 'poet[ry] and swazzle' to the proceedings), but few would disagree that the real power of 'Space Ritual' lies in the riffs. And the riffs keep on coming to such an extent that there is almost an embarrassment of riches over the two discs as the monolithic yet splendid guitar licks come one after another. 'Master Of The Universe' on disc 2 is a particular highlight as is Nik Turner's 'Brainstorm' that brings disc 1 to a close. The quality of the recording is hardly top notch but it all seems to add to the atmosphere. The album is a thrilling ride over the whole two discs with little space wasted until the very end of disc 2. All of disc 1 and the first six tracks on disc 2 seemlessly run together with breathtaking coherency - the album is an experience not just a collection of songs. So why then are inferior versions of 'Master Of The Universe' and 'Born To Go' - both to be found elsewhere on the album - needlessly tacked onto the end? It's not that the versions are bad, they are just not as good - one is advised to program them out when listening. Overall tremendous album really is a must for all fans of psychedelia and metal."
