CD Reviews

Hawkwind-'Weird Tape #2-'Live/Hawklords Studio'(Voiceprint)
Mike Reed | USA | 12/21/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Definitely, the coolest cover of the Weird series.Once again, five tunes from a live 1977 gig, this time in Leicester,UK.You get "Quark,Strangeness&Charm","Masters Of The Universe","Welcome To the Future","Spirit Of The Age",and a pleasant off-the-wall version of "Sonic Attack".Three tunes from 1978,with Steve Swindells on board the mothership."Valium 10" is always nice to hear as so is "Time Of The Hawklords".Never did care for "Douglas In The Jungle",in which the Hawks try their hand at doing an experimental number with humorous lyrics."

"*******************Personnel

Robert Calvert: Vocals

Dave Brock: Keys, Guitars, Vocals

Adrian Shaw: Bass (tracks 1-5)

Simon House: Keys (tracks 1-5)

Simon King: Drums

Harvey Bainbridge: Bass (tracks 6-8)

Steve Swindells: Keys (tracks 6-8)

*******************Technical Stuff

The first five tracks are from the Stonehenge Free Festival that was held on June 21, 1977. The recording quality is a decent soundboard one. The mastering is good.

Tracks 6-8 are Hawklords studio tracks from 1979. The recording quality is decent for studio work and the mastering is also good.

You should have no sound quality issues as long as you don't mind some live tracks.

*******************The Music

About half of the tracks are not available elsewhere, so this is a decent purchase for big fans. The live tracks are pretty good, and quite enjoyable if you are a Calvert fan. I found the Hawklords tracks a bit lacking though. They are pretty strait forward hard rock.

*******************Summary

This one is aimed at hard core fans, and there are a some tracks not available elsewhere. If you aren't a collector or a hard core fan, skip this one."
