CD Reviews

Heather Nova's rawest and most representative album.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Glow Stars remains one of Heather Nova's artistically defining works. Showcasing Nova as a powerful singer and a songwriter capable of both detached grandiosity and sensual, private confessional, Glow Stars is a wonderful reconciliation of the Sarah McLachlan mode (keyboard-heavy arrangements, heavy on mood, whispered vocals) and the emotional fire and sexual tension that McLachlan's music lacks. From opening track "Bare" on, Nova shows that she's unafraid of exploring the sexual aspect of music, and it's been one of her defining traits. Nova's music, first and foremost, heads for the gut; you tend to feel it before you start thinking about it. Her greatest strength is that she never sacrifices sophistication in the process -- her lyrics are rich in imagery, direct and metaphorical at the same time."My Fidelity", "Spirit in You", "Shaking the Doll" and "Mother Tongue" have established themselves in the Nova oeuvre as early classics, the latter two being radically and effectively re-invented on the superlative live LP, Blow. Glow Stars, like its album, suggests a sublime combination of the ethereal, mystical, and human."

"I familiarised myself with Heather's music first on 'Oyster'
( 1994) and then 'Siren'(1998) and later, 'Wonderlust'(1998) and 'South'(2001) so I decided to take a look at her very first album 'Glowstars'(1993). Heather manages to change her musical style with every album that she pens.
'Glowstars' is much less developed than her next album, 'Oyster'. The music on 'Glowstars' is much more simplistic and keyboard based, giving it a 'space'like feel.It is slightly reminiscent of Tori Amos, especially on the track 'Frontier' where the song is accompanied by a male voice, much like the title track 'Little EarthQuakes' ( Tori Amos ) it is from a similar vein. The song 'Ear To The Ground' reminds me instrumentally of Enya's album 'Shepherd Moons' although I'm lost for which song exactly. These two songs are very likeable, the song 'Glowstars' is spirited and lively. On the whole, this album is a bit of a shock to the system, it is more likely to be a grower rather than a grabber. Her music is quirky in a dream-like way with lyrics that not just anybody could pen. Heather's later music demonstrates a more emotional feel, with a greater level of instruments giving her style a much more up-beat feel and sound which is more grabbing and passionate. Her music has matured as her albums have progressed. But it is a well-sought album for any Heather Nova fan's collection."

"HEATHER NOVA "GLOWSTARS",her 1993 debut is possibly her best realease, although I love all of Heathers matteral, but this album in A word is A bit more raw, very sensual, beautiful, and arranged with A bright crystalline production.songs like "MY FIDELITY","SPIRIT IN YOU","SECOND SKIN","FRONTIER" are simply gorgeous! some songs lack full potential as latter versions of "TALKING TO STRANGERS" on "LIVE FROM THE MILKY WAY" shows more promise, but overall "GLOWSTARS" will make you fall in love with HEATHER all over and over again. This cd is highly recommended, but can be hard find.if you are lucky enough to locate A copy consider yourself BLESSED!"
