Retro, but fresh and funky

"The Last Picture Show is a soundtrack for an imaginary 60's movie. The movie probably would revolve around one cool, swinging guy, and it wouldn't take itself too seriously. So, the music has that hint of cocktail lounge to it: movie jazz from just before Quincy Jones. But it's never self-consciously or laboriously retro. You'd never actually think you were listening to "old" music - it's too hip and clever to actually be the soundtrack to an Our Man Flint movie. So, it's like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, who "sound like" the 40's without actually sounding like they're trying to copy anything but the spirit and melodies of some of that music. Heavy Shift revel in the spirit of commercial cool, and give every tune a melody that insists itself into your memory practically at once, laid over a beat that demands that you put down your cold and tasty drink, and dance. It's music that's sophisticated, optimistic, and good-sounding. Buy it, put it in your Discman or car stereo, and make it the soundtrack to a movie starring you. It's a fun show to be in."

"This is a beautiful, smart album. It's perfect background music for writing stories, painting, or anything else creative. I would highly recommend this album to anyone. This brilliant album bounces around from tracks that are so busy and intricate, filled with thought out, constantly changing rhythms (some are ear candy right away, some take a little time), to tracks that are dinner-music worthy jazzy pieces, that will just simply blow you away. I recommend listening to this album a few times with headphones.... it gave me a totally different listening experience. Every time I listen to this album I hear something new."
