Synopsis
Album Description Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of the British band's third album, originally released in 2000. We Love the City was Hefner's commercial and creative peak. The album eschews the band's former broken Indie-Folk sound in favor of a bouncy, urban, Blue-Eyed Soul and an expanded line up including Hammond organs, Wurlitzer pianos and brass sections. Songs like 'Greedy Ugly People', 'Good Fruit', 'Painting and Kissing' and 'The Day that Thatcher Dies' are typical examples of the direct, infectious, intelligent style that endeared Hefner to so many. This two disc set expands the original album to a mighty 39 songs including all of the relevant b-sides, substantially different alternate versions and surprising remixes from Electric Sound of Joy, Piano Magic and The Wisdom of Harry. CD ReviewsExquisite, heart-melting pop Helena | Stockholm, Sweden | 11/13/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "Having been a die-hard fan for years, I tend to greet each new Hefner release with the phrase "If there is any justice in the world, this will be their proper breakthrough". This time the abovementioned plea may well become a prophecy. We Love the City contains some of Hefner's finest songs up to date and though they've stuck to their classic sound one can sense some more sophisticated arrangements on tracks like the lovely first single "Good Fruit". Darren's vocals are as beautifully unstable as usually, adding a lovely fragility to the songs. The album ranges from hugely loveable and witty pop songs (the title track, "Painting and Kissing") to heartstoppingly beautiful love songs("Head to Your Toes", "Good Fruit" etc) via immediate and joyous anthems a la "Love Will Destroy Us in the End" ("The Day that Thatcher Dies") Although Hefner's music stands on its own, very much independent of other contemporary bands, one can make comparisons to bands like Belle & Sebastian, who were my shortcut to the music of Hefner, The Go-Betweens and The Violent Femmes. There are also traces of the outstanding The Smiths in many lyrical aspects. If you like this album, I strongly suggest you go out and buy the other ones - and don't miss the singles, as some of Hefner's best songs are b-sides!If there's any justice in the world, this will be their proper breakthrough. Their music makes my heart grow and they deserve to be giants." Songs about (Unattainable) Girls kdescher | West New York, NJ United States | 03/11/2001 (4 out of 5 stars) "Hefner is directly descended from the literate, lovelorn lyrics of the Wedding Present and Modern Lovers. I saw them live in '96, and was immediately hooked. Jangly, driving guitar rhythms, a singer on the edge of hope and heartbreak, songs about girls just out of reach; its a basic formula, but one which they've continued to find new variations. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an intelligent alternative to what passes for pop today." We Love The City? It NEVER Lets Us Down!! Michael Gallagher | York, PA | 05/29/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "I have every Hefner CD except singles and 7 inches. I could listen to them everyday. We Love The City is no better or worse than any previous Hefner release. Every CD this band releases is unbelievable and I grind my teeth every day trying to figure out why they are so unheard of. We Love The City just adds more pepper to sugar in my Hefner collection...Darren, keep doing what you are doing!!"
