Helen Forrest - Plus Two Great Orchestras

(4 out of 5 stars)
"Helen Forrest was one of the greatest girl singers of the Swing Era, as witness the quality of the bands with which she sang, and the facility of her performances makes her a delight to listen to. According to the notes inside the gatefold, tracks 1 to 17 were recorded in 1938/9 and accompanied by Artie Shaw; the remainder date from 1943 when she was backed by Harry James. I particularly like the hard-driving style of Shaw's band at this time, with Buddy Rich's occasional skip beat thrown in for good measure. This would have rated five stars but for the fact that the transfer from original radio transcriptions has imparted a degree of woolliness to the sound.
