CD Reviews

Good 40's Songs
Robin Sandifer | Dallas, TX USA | 02/15/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Being of an age that I remeber the big bands of the 40's, one of my favorite singers of the time was Helen O'Connell. She did two songs I especially liked - Green Eyes and Tangerine. I am happy to have found this CD and recommend it to those who appreciate 40's music."
Fine album of Helen O'Connell singing at her usual very best

"Helen O'Connell was a wonderful songbird who invariably pleased her adoring fans; and this CD has all of the tracks from two of her record albums entitled Here's Helen and Green Eyes. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork incorporates the original record album artwork very well.

"Who Cares?" is a relentlessly upbeat tune with a relatively fast tempo that has Helen singing with a full orchestra; and it's a wonderful start to the album. Helen never sounded better, either! "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me" has a beautiful melody as Helen does this faultlessly; and "Bye Bye Blues" is equally well done--and how's about that brass?

"Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week)" has Helen swinging brightly to enhance this number; and "You Showed Me the Way" has an elegant piano arrangement that is very easy on the ear--especially when Helen O'Connell is singing those lyrics! "Just You Just Me" again features Helen squarely in the spotlight--which is quite all right by me!

"I Cried for You" slows down the pace a bit; and Helen does a sublime job on "Star Eyes." Helen performs "Star Eyes" flawlessly and I'm very impressed. In addition, "Tangerine" gets the royal treatment from Helen O'Connell who makes her rendition completely unforgettable. I love it! "Amapola" is most romantic; and I really like "When the Sun Comes Out" as well as "All of Me."

"Green Eyes" was a number associated with Helen O'Connell after she really did it up right back in the day; and that somewhat Latin music is romantic and pretty at once. Excellent! "Time Was" is a beautiful, romantic number that has Helen singing once again at her very best; and the album ends strong with Helen O'Connell performing "Yours." Indeed, Helen's treatment of "Yours" is so splendid that it leaves me wanting more!

This album easily proves just how talented Helen O'Connell was when she sang along with some mighty beautiful music; and this is, of course, a must-have for her fans. In addition, people who like classic pop vocals will want to add this to their collections."
