CD ReviewsLewd love W. Y. Yang | New Haven CT USA | 02/22/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "an unforgettable melange of trip hop, jazz, and r&b licks, this debut CD effortless garnered mercury prize nomination within months of its initial release, and not without good reasons: helicopter girl arrived with 11 pungent trax, each intoned in her unique and unmistakable languor, these are songs about lust and love, alienation and vengence, and ultimately, it is her individuality and towering self-confidence that made the mark. have a listen at satan's 7th bride, and it would be crystal clear that such blend of lasciviousness and class just dont come on the market all that often. highly recommended for those with a taste for the unusual." Good luck finding something this unique again layla | 09/02/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "This album may be difficult to find, perhaps because it was just too unconventional for the mainstream. If you're looking for a new sound, then please, go ahead and put out the extra cash for this brilliant album. Helicopter Girl's voice is a sort of dusky Billie Holiday. It is harsh, but soft at the same time. Her withdrawn but passionate expression just seems to draw me in.
The lyrics sound rather LSD inspired, but the interesting thing about them is that despite their random and weird nature, you somehow understand exactly what it is she's singing about. The music itself is a very unique spin on jazz, with melodies that somehow manage to be catchy while still being complex and far from formulaic. I doubt you will find any artist more distinctive than this one." |
