CD Reviews

This is a fantastic record
Patrick G. Varine | Georgetown, Delaware | 11/26/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Out There" combines everything I love about jazz, hip-hop and funk: heavy grooves, backed by breakbeat-style jazz drums and laced with dissonant abstract-jazz touches.

The opener, "Distant Star" is a perfect example. Strings fly skyward, and then the beat drops in and you just can't help smashing your head back and forth. By the time the digitized flute solo takes over, your neck will be hurting.

I really can't think of a bad think to say about this disc. Malcolm Catto is a disgustingly great drummer. Exhibit A: the 7/4 (...? I think) meter that bangs throughout "Sirius B." While Catto keeps the beat, saxophone lines start to bump in and out of the beat, working to a bridge that washes against the time signature and still continues to push forward.

Jazz fans, hip-hop fans, pretty much anyone into dancing or bobbing your head to a hot beat, this is another notch in the belt for Stones Throw. Git it."
Another One From Stones Throw
Para | Chicago | 10/05/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'm a huge fan of Stones Throw Records. Their offshoot record company, Now-Again records is responsible for this one. "Out There" is a great name for it. It's a mix of many styles. Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop, and more. Save for a few vocals during a a song, it's an instrumental album, something that you can play under almost any circumstance, not just background music. It's complicated and each song is different enough to keep you on your toes.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure. But it's something that I love, as someone who is a fan of all the different genres mixed in here.

Give it a chance, as I think it will surprise many just how good this is."
Sounds like a live Ninjatune compilation
M. DEIBERT | Bethlehem , PA United States | 11/27/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you are into the Ninjatune label at all and their many compilations throughout the years, this record has a similar style, but with a live band. The drummer here is great and the whole band sounds a like a DJ spinning. One of most diverse albums I have heard in a while. Kind of reminds me of MMW mixed with Tuatara mixed with DJ Shadow. Great for a critical listen or music background music. Fans of jazz or electronic music should check this out."
