"My first exposure to Shostakovich's 10th was listening to this disc when a friend loaned it to me a while back. I was immediately enthralled. I wasn't sure how much of it was the music and how much of it was the actual performance but I knew this work would become a favorite of mine right away. I wanted to get my own version of the 10th right away, and was lured into buying the combo of 6th and 10th (also on Delos) played by Dallas SO and Litton. That disc was well reviewed and Litton's reputation is strong. But the DSO recording was a disappointment compared to this one. With DePriest and Helsinki, the sound is more precise, less muddy and distant. Also, the performance is more energetic and confident. It brings out the goosebumps. A great CD!By the way, the Festive Overture is a fun addition as well..."
