"I must confess that I've never been much of a fan of mood music per se and have found that, for the most part, I get bored with it rather quickly. But THIS is a marked exception to my view. This is NOT background music! This is simply superior music which is so well orchestrated and played that it is captivating from start to finish. The great Mancini's first recorded efforts were an auspicious debut indeed.
Just for clarification, the first twelve tracks are monaural and were recorded in 1957 just around the time stereo was just beginning to catch on. For the second twelve versions, Mr. Mancini reenlisted much the same personnel as the first version and record the set again in 1959 in stereo as "The Versatile Henry Mancini." Both sets were released by the now defunct Liberty Records to a very receptive public.
As for which version is the best, it's really just a matter of preference rather than performance. Both are sublimely done, but the 1957 version does have a nice, gentle flow to it. There are certain selections from each one that I prefer over the other. The remastered sound for both versions in this cd is excellent.
So, if you want to put yourself in seventh heaven, pick up this gem of a release along with Nelson Riddle's "Sea of Dreams" two-fer on BMG and you'll be transported to paradise!"
I've been waiting for this for years!

"I'm thrilled that this has finally made it to CD...I actually never expected it to! This album was actually my first real exposure to Mr. Mancini when I first picked up the LP in a secondhand record store several years ago. Here we have 2 versions of the album...Tracks 1-12 are the original monaural version, while 13-24 are the stereo one, with the remaining tracks as bonuses and fillers. The stereo version is the one that I am familiar with from the LP; before now, I've never heard the mono one which is really the superior of the two. When I listen to the mono version, I actually sometimes wonder if it's really the same album I've been listening to for 5 years, though I'm sure the only real difference is in the remix to stereo (someone correct me if I'm wrong!).
The sound quality, transfer, and disc mastering are excellent. The LP was already glorious...the CD only improves upon that and besides you get both versions! So if you've been looking for this to appear on CD as I have, do not hesitate to add it to your collection....RUN to buy a copy!"
