Many of these actually are great recordings

"If you look past the hype of the "Great Recordings" label, this EMI box set of 8 CDs is an amazing bargain, since it provides up-to-date remasterings that in other incarnations cost twice as much or more. On the used market the cost per disc is scandalously low. But it hleps, of course, not to own most of the colleciton already. The time span covered runs from just after WW II to the Seventies, and although Karajan made dozens of recordings with the Philharmonia Orch. for EMI, this collection is restricted to the Berlin Phil. (all in stereo) and the Vienna Phil. (historical mono).
Rather than review the contents, which I and many other reviewers have done as individual CDs, here's a rundown of what the collection contains:
Concerto for Piano Violin Cello and Orchestra in C op.56 'Triple Concerto' (Beethoven). Der fliegende Hollander : Overture. Parsifal : Prelude to Act I. Parsifal : Prelude to Act III (Wagner). Symphony No.2 in D op.73 (Brahms). Masonic Funeral Music K477 (Mozart). Metamorphosen AV142 (Richard Strauss). Symphony No.7 in E - Hass edition (Bruckner). Symphony No.4 in A minor op.63 (Sibelius). Symphony No.5 in E flat op.82 (Sibelius). En Saga op.9 (Sibelius). Lemminkainen Suite op.22 : The Swan of Tuonela (Sibelius). Karelia Suite op.11 (Sibelius). Finlandia op.26 (Sibelius). Valse triste op.44 (Sibelius). Tapiola op.112 (Sibelius). Don Quixote op.35 (Richard Strauss). Tannhauser : Overture & Venusberg Music - Paris version (Wagner). Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg : Overture (Wagner). Sinfonia domestica op.53 (Richard Strauss). Tristan und Isolde : Prelude and Liebestod (Wagner). Lohengrin : Prelude to Act I (Wagner). Lohengrin : Prelude to Act III (Wagner). La mer (Debussy). Bolero (Ravel). Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune (Debussy). Alborada del gracioso - Miroirs No.4 (Ravel). La valse - poeme choreographique (Ravel)."
