As with past Hillstomp releases, the music draws heavily from North Mississippi trance blues, a bit from Appalachia, and burns with the energy of punkabilly, but Darker the Night charters new territory, peering into the darker corners of the band's psyche while maintaining the celebratory nature of Hillstomp's raucous blues-billy stomp. In addition to Hillstomp's signature trance blues, Darker the Night showcases banjo songs, a small guest list of elite Portland musicians and even adds the sweet sound of a baying hound to the recording. On Darker the Night, Hillstomp has duct-taped together a powerful and distinctive album of original songs, traditionals, and the occasional revamped blues classic.
