A Good but Generic Blues-Rock/Classic-Rock Album

"If anyone is reading this, I'm a little surprised, since Hiram Bullock is not exactly a front line artist. Nevertheless, this is a fairly interesting album, and thus deserves a review. I myself bought it originally for the funky "Mustang Sally" cover featuring harp work by Sugar Blue, but as I listened to it, began like most of the entire album. Hiram states in the liner notes that this is an album to pay tribute to his guitar heros, and that's pretty much what he does. With the exception of "Mustang Sally" and Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic," all the songs are originals, but almost everyone reflects one of Hiram's guitar influences. The songs are quite good and very well played, making for a consistant and very enjoyable album. Bullock sings and plays witha great deal of sincerity and honesty. The only places where the album weakens are with the Hendrix cover, which finds Hiram trying to sound a bit too much like Jimi, with very mixed results, and the extended instrumentals "Son of Creeper" and "Leeza," which are good numbers, but don't have enough energy to stay strong throughout their six minute running times. All things considered, this is a very good obscure album that should be of interest to fans of classic rock and such guitar greats as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Nothing truly surprising occurs, but the songs are strong, and their well played, which makes it a solid entry for someone looking for something good in the classic rock mode."
