Synopsis

Album Description
Hive: "Working With Sound" [Celestial Recordings] You've heard his work all over the smashing Phoenix Orion album, now you can treat yourself to 50 minutes of his solo production. Hive's brand of (mostly) hip-hop beats shine with a jazzy, sometimes Latin, flair with lots of drums and slick samples. 2 guests appear on this release: DJ Rhettmatic delivers some cuts and MC Hymnal (from Darkleaf) drops a spoken word track. Also available on vinyl.

CD Reviews

Shadowesque laid back beats

"Reminiscent of DJ Shadow's Pre-Emptive Strike and Endtroducing. Not quite up there with the sweeping majesty of Endtroducing, but Hive definitely makes inroads into the multilayered soundscapes that make Shadow's releases so awe inspiring.Laid back beats with a jazzy overtone, this is a complex and interesting listen, that grows on you as you listen more and more. Quite dark in places, but ultimately funky and relaxing.I would recommend it to anyone that likes any of the DJ Shadow / DJ Cam ilk. A worthy addition - put it on and nod your head to the mellow beats"

"A very good CD, no doubt. But I do think that if you're really into the jungle type of techno than you may find "Devious Methods" a little more to your liking. Most of the songs are great, but some are more tuney, and less awsome beats. But if you have herd HIVE, and "Devious Methods", then go ahead and add this to your collection!"
Working with sound, indeed!

"i've never bothered to review an album on here before, but this disc is special and worthy of as much praise as it can get.i've long been a drum and bass fan, but have moved more towards trip-hop as of late. this cd is the perfect blend of chilled-out beats, odd samples and awesome production. the cd isn't mixed, but the track separation is better in a way, as each track is different in its own way. this record is far better than ninja tune or ltj bukem -type tracks.if you're lookin for something to cruise to and blast your system, look harder towards "at close range" by ak1200 (or similar); but if you're looking for something to chill / nod off / dream to, this is the best you can get."
