CD Reviews

Killer compilation from the garage rock queen
Justin Mclaughlin | Los Angeles, CA | 04/15/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The first record I heard from Holly Golightly was her collaboration with Dan Melchior, 'Desperate Little Town'. That album is excellent, so after spinning that constantly for a few days I went to a CD store where I found this compilation, ultra-cheap and a few weeks before its official release. Enough on the autobiographical [junk], on to the music. This is some great bluesy rock here, though that description sorta doesn't do respect to Holly's incredible versatility. There are some stripped down, countryish tunes here, seedy guitar rockers, acidic punky soul tunes, etc. My favorites out of the 24 tunes here (and it's hard to choose) would be 'Come the Day', 'The Ride', 'Card Table', 'Stain', and her killer cover of Ike Turner's 'Your Love Is Mine'. But I'm just list-making here, you have to hear this for yourself. And if you already have her other albums, much of the stuff here was previously found only on B-sides. Grab this."
Another awesome rock record from Ms. Golightly

"This is an album that's been a long time coming, and which will make Holly's fans old and new happy as clams... At last, a compilation of her best 7"-only releases from over the years, gathered up from several uber-cool indie labels. This includes alternate versions of several songs that have appeared on LP, as well as some real obscuro tracks. It's a little light on the cover tunes, but since Holly writes such great original material, we'll forgive them this omission... Get it while you can: this is one of her best records to date! (Originally reviewed: January, 2002)"
