CD Reviews

NOT THE TEMPERANCE SEVEN !!
MR R FIGARO | RICHMOND, SURREY United Kingdom | 07/10/2003
(1 out of 5 stars)

"Whoever this group are they are NOT the Temperance seven !!Although the titles are the same, I do not recognise any of the original line-up !!The tone, style and attitude of the original group elude this "tribute"(?) band. In particular, this group are smugly aware of the musical jokes - THE TEMPERANCE SEVEN were unremittingly straight-faced, blissfully UNaware of their eccentricity. True eccentrics - this lot are posers.
The vocalist here has nothing of the po-faced coolness of "Whispering" Paul McDowell. All in all this is a disappointment to those who remember those masters of harmony and cool AND IT SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR BY AMAZON THAT THIS IS NOT ORIGINAL MATERIAL!!"
You know, I think this is the real thing!

"The Temperance Seven was never a static organisation. We all think of the nine-strong line-up that recorded the big hits 'You're Driving Me Crazy' and 'Pasadena', but even that fluctuated, with Colin Bowles being replaced by Clifford Bevan, and other changes, culminating in Paul McDowell's departure, to be replaced by Allan Moody Mitchell. The band was dissolved in 1968, but reformed by Cephas Howard and David Mills in 1972, originally as the New Temperance Seven. Besides Howard and Mills (who replaced Brian Innes as drummer in about 1966), the New Temperance Seven featured Bobby Mickleburgh and Will Hastie, both of whom had been members of the Temps before the split. Since then the word 'New' has been dropped from the name, musicians have come and gone, but the Temperance Seven still exists and still performs, as it has done for more than forty years. Which brings us to this recording, originally released in Germany in 1975. Here, with a couple of names I admit to not recognising, are are Bobby Mickleburgh, Will Hastie, Ted Wood, Boy Deeble and Graham Collicott - all authentic members of the Temperance Seven. I fancy that this is a short-lived line-up that probably made just the one recording. And the recording is in the true tradition of the original Temps. It's a delight to be able to enjoy the music from this stage of the band's career. Great stuff!"
