The major work is one of his epic ballads to a text by Schiller, the Lament of Ceres. It's nearly 20 minutes long and really does call on an operatic range of vocal resources. Elizabeth Connell, a dramatic soprano, gives these pieces her considerable all, and if she sometimes threatens to overwhelm the intimacy of the song medium, then the fault is as much Schubert's as it is hers.
