Synopsis

Album Description
This recording featuring Jose Serebrier conducting the SWR Sinfonieorchester is a virtual overview of 20th century Spanish Classical Music. The focus of the recording is a stirring rendition of Isaac Albeniz's IBERIA transcribed for orchestra. The renown soprano CAROLE FARLEY is featured in Xavier Montsalvatge's CINCO CANCIONES NEGRAS. Manuel deFalla is represented by two works: "The Interlude and Dance No.1" from LA VIDA BREVE and perhaps his most well known work "The Ritual Fire Dance" from EL AMOR BRUJO. The most recent composition is ARBOL DE ARCANGELES by Tomas Marco and though not of Spanish blood but certainly of Spanish instinct and style is the most famous BOLERO by Maurice Ravel.

"Several weeks ago I was listing to the radio and Iberia was playing. I did not know who was conducting but I could not tear myself away. It was unlike any Iberia I had ever heard. The performance oozed passion, sensuality, and color. I could not wait until it was over when the announcer would name the conductor. When he said Jose Serebrier I smiled to myself. Who else could conduct such a technicolor performance other than a Stokowski protege. I immediately ordered the disc from Amazon and was not disappointed. All the works on the disc are played with the same passion and flair, though for me the Iberia and Ritual Fire Dance with Carole Farley are the standouts. Serebrier has opened my ears anew to these pieces and I am grateful. Give yourself a treat - buy this disc."
