Let me make it clear from the start, this album is not for the faint of heart. It takes a stance, one that comes from the total commitment of the band. There is no short measure in any of this, they pull out all the stops. The pounding rhythms of Chris Burleigh's drums provide a barrage of sound over which Britt's blood and thunder vocals snarl their contempt and accusations. Like a clarion call to battle he urges you to buy into the themes. In 'Forces of Victory' he both encourages you 'We will go on forever if we stand together' and then incites you to 'tear up your social contract'. This no nonsense rock continues apace as Britt levels his guns at the multi-national death-dealing corporations in 'Truth Can Be Explosive'. In the title track 'Insurrection Rocks' he suggests a solution through collective struggle and a new way of thinking. Insurrection Rocks presents us with a glimpse of the kind of lives that generate the level of venom that permeates these powerhouse songs. Tales of social dysfunction where only petty crime and drugs can blank out the brutal reality for far too many considered simply as the enemy within. This music identifies the cracks in the social façade unusual in this post Thatcher era. Since the battle lines are not as clearly defined in socialist Britain, many bands shy away from such thorny issues preferring songs of love and hate that all too often descend into facile nonsense or else deliver the message as some kind of political diatribe. Assert do neither - this is the real deal. Don't go thinking that this is just a bunch of political slogans for the non-politicised. Insurrection Rocks is HC at its gut wrenching best.
