Little known gems from the great composers.....

"The songs on this disc are pieces of music which have only received passing notice in musical life. And after having listened to the 17 songs here one may wonder why. All the songs are small gems from the great Italian opera composers Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi and include ariettas, canzonas and romances with no other accompaniment than a piano. Sure, as the cover booklet states, the subject matter of the songs are all "kisses", "tears", "addios", "memories", "keepsakes" and "sighs" of abandoned women, the lonely or the exiled, but as all opera lovers know it's the exact same material of which great operas are made. And I can only say that it's really beautiful music even if the setting isn't as grand as that of an opera.

Fortunately we have the songs translated into English as well as German and French. I find that the lyrics of this kind of songs are essential to the appreciation of them. The uses of words in these songs are done in a slightly old-fashioned manner, but it gives the songs a kind of an elegance and beauty that I find very attractive. And sung in the voice of José Carreras they are nothing short of wonderful.

These songs are best appreciated if you take the time to sit down, put on your headphones and have the lyrics in front of you when you listen to them. José sings these songs in his unmistakeable style; honest and heartfelt, it comes from the very deepest of his soul. This was recorded in 1989 and his voice is as beautiful as it ever was; dark coloured with that underlying hint of sensuality. In some of the songs he takes my breath away; his soft notes are so achingly beautiful that they literally bring me to tears.

My favourite songs are Bellini's "La ricordanza" and Rossini's "L'esule", but the whole album is highly recommended and I'm quite sure that if you already know and like the works coming from these opera composers you're destined to fall in love with these songs as well."
