CD ReviewsFascinating David Saemann | 01/27/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "This CD begins with Johnson leading his first sessions at age 21. The 1946-9 material is generally serious bebop, with beautiful instrumental work. The 1949 session features a 19 year old Sonny Rollins in what was only his second recording session. He contributes two original tunes and meshes with Johnson's trombone admirably. Switch to 1954, and the beautifully engineered Rudy Van Gelder recording of Johnson's first session with Kai Winding (and Charles Mingus on bass), and the tone is entirely different. Here is cool Jazz, with a warm tone on the trombone playing. There is an original tune by Mingus which is highly atmospheric. Fascinating CD."
