"Aldwell's account is mesmerizing. He is in his own sound world, and it is extremely beautiful. I won't try to comment on whose style is most period 'correct', since all Bach playing on modern piano is transcription. To my ear, and this is referring just to WTC2, Aldwell gives the most satisfying and pleasurable treatment; Tureck is a truly great interpreter, but the early 50's sound detracts; Fischer's sound (on my EMI version) is bordering on unlistenable; Richter (a great favorite of mine) suffers from a weak recording on RCA; Hewitt is lively and animated and a good choice; Schiff is also very good, but kinda bland so I prefer Hewitt to him; Gould starts well in WTC2, but the further he goes, especially as he gets into the second half of the keys, he is playing so fast in places that the voices run together and get muddled--it's almost painful and I honestly can't listen to him all the way through on WTC2.
Here is a comparison of the different versions by a reviewer named Don Satz. He comes down in favor of Tureck and Aldwell in WTC2:
As other reviewers have noted, Aldwell's WTC1 can't be found in hard copy. However, I bought a download of it for $11 on iTunes.
I would like to thank the other reviewers for their comments, as I never would have heard a word about the Aldwell, were it not for them. Strongly recommended, even if you like the version you already have.

"This is a most amazing performance of the Book II of the Well Tempered Clavier, with Mr. Aldwell enunciating the various voices of the fugues in the clearest and most creative possible manner, and bringing his awesome originality to the preludes as well. The performances tend to be slower than often played, which bring out the details of the material, without losing the emotional impact at all. Of the many different recordings I have of these works, these are the ones I always go back to again and again. Really Divine!"

"There is not enough that can be said of this genius recording. Edward Aldwell was an absolute master Bacherian. He understood Bach on an incredibly deep level.
Nonesuch let his recording of WTC Book 1 go OOP, buy Book 2 before it's too late. And if you can find Aldwell's WTC Book 1...get it while you can.
I own 20 different versions of the complete WTC and have heard many more.
This is my favorite!
Others to listen for (after Aldwell): Rosalyn Tureck (DG), Davitt Moroney (Harmonia Mundi), Angela Hewitt (Hyperion), Kenneth Gilbert (Archiv), and Andras Schiff (London)...these are just a few of the ones that are of very high quality

The Best WTC Ever

"As I wrote in my review of Aldwell's WTC Book I set: The late, great Edward Aldwell was not only a superb interpreter of Bach but also a preeminent scholar of Schenkerian Musical Analysis. (Aldwell co-wrote what is probably the finest music harmony textbook ever written--"Harmony and Voice Leading".) His deep understanding of classical music gives his Bach performances a beauty, depth, and clarity that one does not find anywhere else in the record catalog. His untimely death at the age of 68 from a vehicular accident is one of the great losses to the world of classical music."

"Without question the very best interpretation of Bach I've ever heard on piano and I've got six different performances,"
