"Whispering Jack Smith along with Gene Austin and Rudy Vallee were products of a new era, the microphone era. Before them most male singers were loud and shrill like Billy Murray and Irving Kaufan. However with the invention of the microphone crooners were born, and thus were able to sing in an intimate more romantic whispering style. Whispering Jack Smith was one of the biggest crooners of the era and is represented here with his finest 78's, most of them were big hits for the appealing baritone in the mid twenties. This is a great cd with fine liner notes, and is worth picking up, if you have any intetest at all in crooners."
FORGOTTEN STAR FROM THE PAST

"WHISPERING JACK SMITH REALLY DID HAVE TO WHISPER WHEN HE SANG, 'CAUSE HE WAS EXPOSED TO MUSTARD GAS DURING WW1 AND INJURED HIS THROAT! SO HE COMPENSATED BY DEVELOPING A STYLE OF SOFT, INTIMATE, AND ROMANITC SINGING AND WAS HUGELY POPULAR DURING THE 20'S. HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST 'CROONERS'. I ENJOY HEARING THIS CD, BUT I WILL SAY THAT HE CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO CLIFF "UKELELE IKE" EDWARDS, THE VERY FIRST SCAT SINGER AND THE VOICE OF JIMINY CRICKET (ANOTHER HUGE STAR FROM THE 20'S WHO IS FORGOTTEN TODAY)."
