"Featuring Don(ald) Byrd on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Douglas Watkins on bass and Ronald Tucker on drums, I believe this is Jackie McLean's debut recording as a leader. - - Jackie McLean emerges as a solidly swinging Charlie Parker influenced improviser who has Bird's bag down solid, but also putting a lot of his own thought into it. A nicely swinging session, this is bebop before it got too silly and far out... in fact, if you're looking to hear some really far out Jackie McClean stuff this may not exactly be your bag, but if you're looking to hear a brilliantly swinging session with some venturous soloing, and an occasionally riff now and then that might even make you smile and laugh out loud, this toe tapping session is definitely for you.... (McLean's original PARKER'S MOOD type slow blows LITTLE MELONAE is both da' cake and the icing on it ! He definitely blows a fuse on that one !)"
