CD ReviewsThere's a better way to go. greg taylor | Portland, Oregon United States | 05/19/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is an excellent session recorded on June 14th, 1962 with McLean killing on the alto, Kenny Dorham on the trumpet, Sonny Clark on the piano, Butch Warren on the bass, and Mr. Billy Higgins on the drums. Even though McLean was already beginning to experiment with more modern forms at this time, in this session he is thoroughly in his bebop mode.
This recording has a curious history. It was apparently listed in the Blue Note catalogue but was not released until years after it was actually recorded. In any case, the point of my review is expressed in it's title. This is not the way to buy this session of McLean's. The latest Blue Note Connoisseur Series edition of McLean's Vertigo session includes this music. Vertigo ...also includes a February 11, 1963 session that features Donald Byrd on the trumpet, Herbie Hancock on the piano, Butch Warren on the bass and Tony Williams playing drums on his very first recording. The Connoisser series, as always, are limited so snap that bad boy up. You can then spend some very enjoyable time trying to figure out which session you prefer." |
