Synopsis

Album Description
Evening Falls, the ECM debut of Jacob Young catapulted the Norwegian-American guitarist to international attention in 2004. "One of the most refreshing albums in a long while... a wonderful reminder of the unforced lyricism that can still be found at the heart of jazz." (Jazz Journal International), "Sounds how Pat Metheny might have, had he grown up in Norway instead of the American Midwest" (all about jazz). Young has developed a clear identity on three fronts: as guitarist, as writer of memorably melodic material, and as bandleader of originality. All these distinctions are evident on Sideways. New album features the same distinguished group as its predecessor, a unit that draws on three generations of Norwegian jazz - and Mathias Eick, Vidar Johansen, Mats Eilertsen and Jon Christensen each space to stretch out, inside Young's open, attractive tunes.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have envisioned an album like this one. Had been looking in vain. Just when I thought "Let it go" - into my life comes SIDEWAYS. There is a wholeness to this work that has in it qualities I've only been able to get on a track here or there on too many of the c.d.s I've listened to. For e.g., the sparseness/silence/romantic & lush beauty of Moonbeams on BIRTH OF THE COOL,or Blue In Green on KIND OF BLUE. I've always hungered for an album that would have this kind of minimalist approach to the heartbreaking beauty that, to me, seems all too rarely focused upon in Jazz - throughout an entire c.d. I've never loved Bill Evans more than his playing of ballads; same for Miles Davis. Jacob young/Mathias Eick/Vidar Johansen/Mats Eilertsen/Jon Christensen have created just such a c.d."
