CD Reviews

Improvisation is the word: an alltime favorite!
Dave van der Spank | Utrecht Netherlands | 12/28/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This man has made such a variety of great albums that it is too hard to pick a single one as best. On this live CD many favorites are collected, and Akkerman shows that no one can re-invent his own music like he can.

The song "No hang ups" gives me the ultimate chicken pimples, melancholy can be a beauty you know... The Focus classics II and IV (here called "Soft Focus") are on the menu, plus flashes of Sylvia, Hocus Pocus and Tommy in a new jacket.

Akkerman's solo work makes for the nice ballads Puccini's Cafe and Skydancer (super jazzy chordwork), Prima Donna, Virgin Mary and Am I losing you (classic ballads). Jan's improvisation and "title-twisting" on the uptempo medley's gives you something to puzzle out.

If you're a gtar fan in any way, go out & do yourself this favor!"
