"For those of us who don't mind taking a step outside the meager standard repertoire, this CD is a real find as it offers world premiere recordings of not less than three fine cello concerti by Hasse, Graf and Michael Haydn. Opening the disc is the only non-premiere, the lively CPE Bach A major concerto.
I have long lamented the absence of a recording of the 'Michael Haydn' concerto in Bb. While there is some debate about who actually wrote it, there is no doubt that it is a very substantial cello concerto, full of memorable melodies and difficulties for the soloist. It compares very well with the two concertos by Joseph Haydn, and hopefully this concerto will make its way into the concert repertoire in the future.
The Graf and Hasse concerti are attractive and cheerful works, but perhaps not as memorable as the Haydn and CPE Bach.
All four concertos are well performed by Jan Vogler, and the Münchener Kammerorchester under Reinhard Goebel provide a fine support.
Clearly one of the most interesting cello CDs to be released during this decade, do not miss it!"
