CD Reviews

Yet another fine underappreciated single from Child
Eso | Oakdale | 02/08/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Maybe it was the oversaturation at radio of "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" and the simulataneous release of a "darker and "edgier" follow-up "Welcome to the Real World" that made programmers shy away from this gem. Perhaps it was too dire and too serious a song for programmers to have embraced."Welcome to The Real World" is a track that just fell short of the entire US top 40 at #49 despite reaching the U.S. Top 40 Billboard Pop Singles chart based on sales alone. The follow-up to "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" was a superb social commentary that was released in May of '90 - less than two months prior to the Persian Gulf debacle and the threat of all-out war the first time with Saddam Hussein. To to try to top the success of "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" is not an easy task, however the message of "Welcome to the Real World" and its social relevance made it as important as its smash predecessor. It displayed synthesized chords and strings with an ornate classically-inflected bridge amidst yet anotherhauntingly approriate nursery-rhyme scheme just as its predecessor "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" had - yet another fascinating example of why Jane Child fascinates. On the Maxi CD-Single, this time remixes were done by Jimmy Jamm and Terry Lewis and featured a Prof. T Rap evoking one of Jane's favorite artists: Chuck D. from Public Enemy."
