Jane, again after all these years

"I have always liked the tone of Jane Morgan's voice since I first heard it in the late 1950s. Her first hit in the UK "The Day the Rains Came" is one of my all-time favourite records. I was given the follow up "If Only I Could Live My Life Again" and i enjoyed that, too. (By the way does anyone know whether this disc has been released on CD?) "An American Songbird in Paris" affords the opportunity to hear that wonderful clear voice again in some of Jane's early 1950s recordings, especially "Fascination" which established her on the cabaret scene in Europe. A good welcome CD."

A bit of nostalgia for an artist too little remembered now.

"One afternoon in 1969, while I was coloring ladies' hair in a salon just off Baker St. in London, I was told that the next morning I was to be at a certain suite at the Savoy Hotel to "blondize" the coif of the American singer Jane Morgan, who was beginning an engagement at the Savoy Grill. I was excited, because I'd long enjoyed her singing on American television.



I found Miss Morgan far more friendly and approachable than I'd imagined, so I had no trouble telling her in unvarnished words that her hair was all but dissolved away by years of careless treatment and that she should consider having it cut short and restyled to a tossed look, a la Kay Kendall, and return to America with a fresh new look. Either that or she might go back to America bald. She immediately agreed and has spent the ensuing half-century much improved, I like to think, by my brash mouth.



But my most amusing memory of that day was the hot-ahd-handsome younger stud who lounged on the bed throughout my visit (and gave me the largest tip I'd ever received to that time). She introduced him only as Jerry, and what a personality he had! For the next couple of years I worried about Jane Morgan, because I imagined how hard she had worked for the money she had and just how quickly that exciting gigolo had run through it.



Telescope ahead a couple of years; I'm back in Los Angeles. And one day there was a big story in the L. A. Times about a political fund-raising bash for Ted Kennedy thrown by just about the most powerful and richest rock music producer in the world Jerry Weintraub and his wife Jane Morgan in their palatial Malibu home, which had once been home to Jack Warner. Talk about reading it wrong! I was greatly relieved for the fortunes of Jane Morgan. But I've never again trusted my powers of prognostication.



That's why I bought this album. But when I played it I realized I'd forgotten just how good Jane Morgan was. These old monaural recordings are quite dated, but to someone who can't imagine losing the best of the past they're a great addition to his collection.

"JANE MORGAN'S SINGING A DELIGHT

It is obvious when one hears Jane Morgan sing she had classical training. This "An American Songbird In Paris" is really a super collection of Jane's early efforts and hearing Jane sing with BERNARD HILDA is an added thrill. Those old 78's were really cleaned up! Thanks Savoy Records for this great collection (Jane's first US Lp is included)as well as her 1957 hit, "Fascination." Jane had numerous 45's for KAPP RECORDS that need to be on cd's."
