CD Reviews

Charming, nostalgic and sophisticated

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jane Powell could really sing; and this album proves it! Her voice is in excellent form here; and she puts a great deal of genuine emotion into every number. Jane was a true professional who worked hard to please her fans; and they loved her for it. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done.

The album starts with Jane singing beautifully; she does a great rendition of "What Gives? What Goes?" and her sophisticated phrasing is wonderful to hear and enjoy. The music fits perfectly with her vocals; and in particular the brass is used to great advantage. "Mind If I Make Love to You" has Jane singing a traditional love song that sparkles when she does it; and of course "True Love" glistens brighter than silver and gold combined when Jane Powell handles it! She makes it seem so easy but we know it really wasn't. Jane's talent always carried her through; and that's grand.

"Imagination" gets the royal treatment from this charming songbird and actress; Jane sings this with panache and I'm very impressed. "The Things We Did Last Summer" is a very special number in Jane's capable hands; she performs this faultlessly and it's major highlight of the CD. I love the strings on "The Things We Did Last Summer," too. "Ev'ry Time" has Jane squarely front and center--right where she belongs! "Ev'ry Time" is very well done.

"Comes Love" has Jane handling complex tempo and key changes like a pro; and there's yet another gem in "My Baby Just Cares for Me." "My Baby Just Cares for Me" sounds so sweet as Jane does this to perfection--and beyond! You're bound to like this number. "Hooray for Love" is another great tune that I always like to hear; and "Can't We Be Friends" is quite powerful and emotional; Jane sings this just right! "For Every Man There's A Woman" sports a sublime arrangement and Jane outdoes even herself as she delivers "Let's Face the Music and Dance" to a splendid musical arrangement. "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good" is another fine tune that Jane Powell sings amazingly well; and "Easy Come, Easy Go" is better than ever when Jane performs it.

"I Have You to Thank" showcases Jane's polish as a professional entertainer who always strove to do her very best. The CD ends strong, too, with Jane Powel's treatment of "A Ride on a Rainbow." "A Ride on a Rainbow" is very beautiful and it leaves me wanting more.

Jane Powell will be remembered fondly as one of the best entertainers of the twentieth century; and hopefully there will be new Jane Powell fans as CDs like this one continue to sell. This is a must-have for any Jane Powell fan; and people who like classic pop vocals will not be disappointed."
