CD Reviews

One of Jay's best

"Thank God somebody finally had the good sense to release this album on cd! I originally bought this album on vinyl after its release in the summer of 1976. They played the cut "Medicated Goo" on my local radio station and I immediately went out and bought the album. I love Traffic's original version of this song, but I think I like Jay's better, especially when I detected Joe Walsh's guitar licks in this rendition. There isn't a clinker cut on side one, my four favorites being "Snakes On The Run", "Turn It Up", "Medicated Goo", and "All Alone In The End Zone". My other favorite cuts are "Cinnamon City" and "Madam Doctor." This album embodies the lyrical genius and melodic presence of Jay combined with the rock 'n' roll spirit of Joe Walsh and Joe Vitale. Ferguson's keyboarding and Joe's unmistakable guitar riffs make this album a pleasure to listen to over and over again. When I went away to college that fall, I must have played this album at least once a day for the entire school year-yeah, it's that good. If you don't like this one, then you don't like melody, harmony, rhythm, funk, or good ol' rock 'n' roll. I'm excited that I can finally add this long lost and long overdue classic to my cd collection! Like the song says "Turn It Up" and enjoy!"
California Boogie Rock and Roll

"The first solo effort by Jay Ferguson has Jay playing quaterback and catching the touchdown passes at the same time with a great supporting team of talented musicians(it's hard not to make a football reference with a title like All Alone in the End Zone). The guitar work of Joe Walsh and Joey Murcia, the percussion of Joe Vitale, and bassist George Perry provide their individual touches for Jay's songwriting. Overall it is a California boogie rock and roll album at it's finest. Any fan of Spirit, The James Gang, or Tommy Bolin will enjoy it instantly. The best part is that Jay's music and song writing take you back to the mid seventies West Coast feel with songs that still sound fresh today. Joe Walsh fans will enjoy hearing his distinct and familiar phrasing on carefully crafted songs that have not been worn out by classic rock radio."
Good to see on CD...now let's have the rest of them!

"I was a HUGE Jo Jo Gunne fan and was bummed when they called it a day...but when this solo LP came out, I snapped it up. This album is a joy from start to finish...from the opening of Snakes on the Run to the Traffic cover Medicated Goo, to the remake of Jo Jo Gunne's To The Island (he would revisit the Gunne catalog on the Thunder Island album with an excellent update of Babylon) to the joyful reggae of Turn it Up...it's hard not to sit there and smile with the headphones on. If you liked his work in spirit and Jo Jo Gunne, you've got to hear this one...if you have this one and the other two he did for Asylum, then you're like me and want the two Capitol albums he did post 1980 on CD in this country without the outrageous price tag they want for the imports (if you can still find them)! Also check out Big Chain...the return of Jo Jo Gunne...check out the band's website for previews of that one. There's justice in the world...they're back! It's been too long since we've heard from Jay. Enjoy!"
