First, re the title, "Jazzy Guitar Classics". No. Not "Jazzy" at all.
And it's fine that it isn't.
This is a set of beautifully perfomed late-20th century classical guitar works, kind of in the same spirit as Julian Bream's long-out-of-print "20th Century Guitar". Respected German guitarist Michael Troster's program here includes compositions by Roland Dyens (b. 1954), William Walton (1902-1983), and works by the performer himself (b. 1956).
How did I learn about this disc? I requested it because I wanted to hear Dyens' "Fuoco", and crossed my fingers the rest of the disc would somehow mesh with that beautiful piece -- and actually found myself taken with every track.
Don't shy from it if you feel you aren't in the mood for anything called "Jazzy Guitar Classics" -- but if you are interested in fresh, interesting and fairly "crunchy" / serious New Music from a very fine classical guitarist, I can recommend it. Just ignore the dopey cover. (Troster's label owes him, big time!)
With quite interesting, informative liner notes in German, English and French. 2002 on Thorofon, UPC 4003913124357.
Enjoy!
