CD Reviews

Poor Jeannie

"A crime and a mystery. I'm sure many of you could fill me in on the past high points of the career of the Kendalls. I don't know much other than what I learned when her last cd came out. JEANNIE KENDALL on Rounder was lovely--simple acoustic arrangements, great singing and altogether an artistic success. I loved it. The new cd--very strange--has two of the same producers, but it couldn't be more different. It's on a label called Golden not on Rounder. I have rarely heard an album as overproduced as this one. So many co-producers, mixers, dubbing men, recording at different locations, etc.--you can practically hear the tech men turning the dials and fiddling (not with a fiddle, though). Jeannie's very fine voice is lost in all of this. It makes her sound like every other under talented, overproduced Nashville diva. A crime. The songs are generally weak. The arrangements way too heavy and complicated. Quite awful. The most telling evidence is in the one song the two albums share: "Just a Memory." On the Rounder acoustic disk, it's a lovely song and performance with Stuart Duncan on fiddle and Rob Ickes on dobro. The new version has lots of drums and electric guitar, two producers, five harmony vocalists, a harmony co-producer, etc.--all of this resulting in the crowded and highly programmed sound of the rest of the album. What a disappointment! Hasn't Jeannie learned anything from Dolly's experience on her last few bluegrass albums? Go buy Jeannie's last cd--the acoustic JEANNIE KENDALL on Rounder. It's beautiful. ALL THE GIRLS I AM is not."
A nice surprise! And what a voice!

"I fondly remember The Kendalls from my childhood; they were HUGE on '70s country music scene. So when I saw this CD at the record store, I decided to take a chance -- and I am certainly glad I did! This lady's voice is even more amazing than it was back in her commercial heyday. Some of the CD is a tad overproduced, but it's a bold step for an artist who has been steeped in traditional country most of her career. This CD has a country-pop feel to it, like something one would expect from Rosanne Cash, Juice Newton or Mary Chapin Carpenter ... and while Kendall may not blend the styles as naturally as those icons, she does succeed. Kendall chooses strong material, such as the powerful "You Just Don't Get Me - Do You?" and the heart-wrenching "Your Picture, Your Pillow and Me." Highly recommended."
