Mills is talented, but this cd doesn't show his talents

"Jeff Mills is one of the great pioneers of Detroit techno, and every person interested in the origins and development of electronic music should be familiar with his work and its influence. However, his main talent, in my humble opinion, has been as a disc jockey, not as a composer of individuals "tracks." As a dj, Mills can combine numerous bits and pieces of techno into a collage that's fascinating and compelling. The individual pieces that comprise the mix, however, are generally pretty repetitive, so they are not all that interesting after a few minutes of exposure. Overall, that's the source of the problem with this disc by Mills. Each track reveals an interesting effect or set of sounds, but there is no progression or change, and so there is little to hold the listener's interest for long. These individual musical textures could be used to great advantage in a mix or as part of a longer and more varied piece, but on their own they don't do much for me."

"it never fails. somebody from europe finds something american that they like and they have to come to the conclusion that, if it's so good, it must have a heavy connection to the uk. these folks really don't know diddley about what's going on in the states. what a bunch of self-congratulatory snots. jeff mills is very detroit - sorry, not very london.and being from detroit actually means energetic, yes, but also samey and unitextured and dated, so i don't really agree that this smokes the competition."

Jeff Mills *IS* Techno

"I remember when Mills was just the number one DJ on Detroit radio... Then he went to new york and tore up the lime light, and showed them what it means to be a dj. without a doubt he's the untouchable leader of all techno. THis guy ain't notable cause he's old school, he's the man. He's THE MAN! I've gone to parties in new york, la, sf, and chicago. it's a simple fact that detroit djs are on another level. if you don't know that for a fact it's cuz you ain't wise enough to know this. detroit has a real tight and competitive school. they invented techno and you can see it in the way kids dance in detroit. techno and motown records have a certain swing and you can see it in the way detroit city gets down.the way detroit djs blend mixes is sick. you wont hear this anywhere else. it's sick!jeff mills track are designed with this super dj mixing knowledge thats like a million miles above the best dj you can think of. his tracks are tools, for mixologists. they are totally unique.right now i hear drum and bass kids like photek amon tobin getting all these props for futuristic jazz and bossa novas. those kids need to check out jeff mills. mills beats are a more elegant more sophisticated more futuristic and more digested version of the same thing. he totally outclasses those neophytes. his tracks are funkier and way more mixable. you don't even notice they are cruising at 170-240 bpm or whatever. I wish all producers and programmers knew about mills"
