CD ReviewsHuge leap in quality from the Iceman's first two albums... ikaris | Marietta, GA United States | 04/05/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Butler takes a few giant leaps forward wtih this CD.......busting past the "supper club" productions of "Jerry Butler Esq." and "He Will Break Your Heart," and into pioneering soul territory. Along with Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and Ray Charles, Butler was laying the foundations of the soul movement in the early 60s.Some strains of the "white audience-friendly" elements are still here, namely in the cover art. There are also some Sinatra/supper club elements in the music on "Aware of Love." But by "Need to Belong" Butler was in full gear and the production quality improves immensely. The title track, "Giving Up On Love" and others simply make this a must for soul fans. Don't overlook hidden gems like "Where's the Girl" and "Strawberries." "Need to Belong" is by far and away Butler's best Vee-Jay album. Even "Aware of Love" is a fine album overall, and includes the great "Find Yourself Another Girl." Simply wonderful, outstanding material........and Butler's voice is unbeatable. And as always, great packaging by Collectibles."
