CD Reviews

Beautiful theme
shel99 | 06/22/2000

"The opening theme of this album ("Morning on the Beach") is quite simply one of the loveliest melodies I've ever heard. When I saw this movie for the first time, I heard the first few notes and knew that I would have to run out and buy the soundtrack as soon as I had the chance. The album is a combination of soft, bittersweet, romantic melodies and dark, heart-thumping music that underscores the scenes with Julia Roberts' abusive, scheming husband. A recording of Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl" is thrown in for good measure, although I wish it was either at the very beginning or very end of the album; having it between two instrumental tracks interrupts the flow of the music, and I usually skip the track when I'm listening to the CD. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful album."
I keep returning to this haunting score

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Jerry Goldsmith has been my favorite contemporary movie composer since the 60's (Lilies of the Field, The Blue Max)up until his last scores (Timeline). In retrospect the score to Sleeping With the Enemy should seem like a minor work among so many major masterpieces, but since his death I keep returning to this hauntingly beautiful music more than any of his others. The touching melody and the unique chord changes of the main theme move me immensely. I've had this soundtrack for years but it was only in the past year or so that I've started to repeatedly listen to it.

It's not a long score and it includes the Van Morrison classic Brown Eyed Girl, but the combination of the memorable theme and some throbbing piano driven suspense music make it a winner.

At first I wondered if I should write a review because when I started to read the previous entries I thought I had entered a chat room, finally I read a couple of actual reviews- something I think this music deserves."
