CD Reviews

Classy, Top Notch, Vocal Masterpiece
Scott F. Rogers | Columbus, Indiana United States | 04/26/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was 14 years old the first time I heard Jerry Vale's voice. It was listening to the richly romantic vinyl album "I Hear A Rhapsody" in 1968, and was the beginning of a collection that continues to this day. That song, now with impressive digital remastering, is perfect for Jerry Vale's vocal artistry. The song starts with dramatic, breath-taking orchestration that's arranged and conducted by Glenn Osser. With a graceful and full-powered voice, Jerry begins his journey through this vocal masterpiece, hitting all the high notes with all his goose-bump-giving power and clarity...."And when I hear you call, so softly to me, I don't hear a call at all, I hear a rhapsody..." The song is absolutely beautiful, and Jerry Vale puts everything he's got into it, leaving you wanting more, and more you get! Every song on the "I Hear A Rhapsody" half of this CD collection is vocal artistry equal to a Renoir painting. Each song compliments the next, almost story-like, a love story, and it's all due to Jerry's professional, powerful, interpretation of the lyrics. It's as if every song on the album was written just for Jerry Vale. Jerry's trademark sliding vocals are perfect for "Stella By Starlight". "It's Easy To Remember" is a great follow-up to "Stella By Starlight", the lyrics being like a sequel. And all the songs that follow continue the story, a story of lost loves, wanting love, finding love, heartache, love letters, and romance. There are a couple of classics here. "Stardust", nicely arranged and superbly sung by Jerry, and "Love Letters", which is from the Academy Award nominated 1945 movie of the same title that starred Jennifer Jones. This exquisite digitally remastered album is worthy of a tuxedo, expensive champagne, and long-stem roses.

The "There Goes My Heart" half of this collection recorded in 1965, is the peppier side of this double CD. Sounding better than ever with its digital remastering, the basses are deeper, and you can hear every instrument with crisp clarity, instruments you never heard on the vinyl version of this album. Jerry Vale is known for a couple of vocal styles that have made him famous. One of those styles, are his trademark grace notes, and the other, are his Dean Martin style rolling melodies. "There Goes My Heart" is a collection of both. With the better than average back-up singers digitally boosted into the listening foreground, and the vibrant orchestra being directed by Marty Manning, it's a fun album with lots of toe-tapping sing-a-long type melodies. My five favorites are "There Goes My Heart", "I Understand", "Just One More Chance", "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place", and "I Can't Help It". Once you listen to these songs, you'll be hooked, finding yourself singing them to yourself throughout the day.

This collection is one of Jerry Vale's finest, his voice is powerful and clear, and his lyrical interpretations are pure poetry. I highly recommend it to collectors and newcomers alike. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

"There Goes My Heart/I Hear a Rhapsody is a terrific twofer Jerry Vale CD that has all the tracks from two of Jerry's record albums entitled There Goes My Heart and I Hear A Rhapsody. Jerry Vale was one of the best male crooners of the twentieth century; and his CDs are selling even to this day! Jerry delivered his songs and ballads with panache and he always gave blood to make his performances memorable--how admirable is that? The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent; and I like that the artwork incorporates the artwork from the original record album releases.

The CD starts with Jerry Vale singing his best on "There Goes My Heart;" this tune showcases Jerry's excellent vocal abilities and it's a fine starter number for this CD. The backup singers sound great and I like the percussion, too. "Just One More Chance" is very poignant and memorable when Jerry tackles it; he makes this shine brighter than silver and gold--what a winning song this is in Jerry's capable hands! "There Must Be A Way" is a beautiful torch song; although it's sad the melody is so beautiful you may enjoy listening to "There Must Be A Way" over and over again! I also like that slightly Latin touch to "Sogni D' Oro (Dreams of Gold)."

"Can't You See I'm Sorry" gets the royal treatment from Jerry Vale who sings this with all his heart and soul; I love it! "Without Saying A Word (Sen Dirti Una Parola)" is a very pretty love song; and listen for Jerry to outdo even himself on "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place." "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place" glows bright and Jerry's keen sense of timing makes this a strong highlight of this CD. "You Were Mine For A While" is another example of Jerry's exceptional ability to perform faultlessly; the backup chorus sounds great--not that Jerry truly needed it but they do sound pretty good anyway.

"It's Easy To Remember" is another charmer that really stands out thanks to Jerry's fantastic interpretation of this timeless ballad. Similarly, "I Can Dream Can't I?" has a very lush musical arrangement and Jerry was born to sing songs like this one. It's really quite something to hear Jerry Vale sing this so very well; he never lets go of a single superlative note. "The Nearness Of You" features Jerry squarely front and center--which is more than quite all right by me! "The Nearness Of You" is clearly another huge highlight of this CD.

"I Wanna Be Loved" is most romantic; and those strings add a lot to the number. "Stardust" sounds fresh and new when Jerry Vale sings it; you can hear the power in his voice and that's grand. "Pretend" has a great piano arrangement that infuses it with so much elegance; and the CD ends very nicely with Jerry Vale performing "Love Letters." "Love Letters" just plain sounds terrific and it leaves me wanting more.

Jerry Vale brought so much joy and happiness to countless numbers of people; and songs like these prove he had incredible talent. This is a must-have for his fans; and anyone who loves classic love songs will enjoy this album as well.
