"Tenor saxphonist Jimmy Forrest's "Forrest Fire" is yet another Prestige/OJC CD that has been deleted, and is now fetching outrageous sums in the Marketplace. Fortunately, I had the ability to pick up this disc in a Newbury Comics cut-out bin while it was still reasonably priced. Aside from just being a solid session, this August 9, 1960 Rudy Van Gelder engineered date is notable for being one of organist Larry Young's first recordings. Guitarist Thornel Schwartz and drummer Jimmie Smith round out the "Larry Young Trio," who appeared days earlier on Testifying and six weeks later on Young Blues (see my review of the latter). For outstanding early 60s soul jazz grooves, go ahead and start a "Forrest Fire.""
